Most appealing game (according to FanMatchTM): Wisconsin at Florida. There was little suspense in this one, save for a 10-0 Wisconsin run midway through the first half. The Gators rolled to a 74-56 [63 poss] win behind Erik Murphy’s perfect 10-for-10 from the field. As a team they made 20-of-30 two-point attempts. For the first time in decades, the Badgers are out of the Pomeroy top ten, and if this game was an accurate reflection on the rest of the season, Bo Ryan isn’t interested in defending his national slowest-pace title. I won’t say the shot clock wasn’t needed, but it wasn’t much of a factor.
Major upsets (<15% win probability): Santa Clara (9%) didn’t just beat Saint Louis, they ran away to a 74-62 [66] win. It might be a little soon to push the “Majerus-isn’t-here” panic button, but consider that Santa Clara last beat a D-I team on 12/29/11 and last won on an opponent’s floor on 3/30/11. So the situation has my attention. Kevin Foster scored 30 and stole seven for the victors.
Crazy comebacks (<3% win probability): None.
Unbeatens remaining: 140 (10 fewer than yesterday). James Madison is still here.
Winless teams remaining: 74 (12 fewer than yesterday). James Madison is still here, too. It’s a brain-teaser! And the solution is that JMU is the only team that has yet to play a game. They start tonight at UCLA, so I have to think they’ll still be here tomorrow.
Other notable events: Fresno State only needed 39 points to beat UC Riverside, and won easily, 39-30 [56]. It was the lowest scoring non-Big Ten game since Monmouth beat Princeton 41-21 on 12/14/05. Elsewhere, Creighton beat UAB 77-60, but Doug McDermott scored just five points, removing one obstacle from Nate Wolters’ inevitable march to the national scoring title.
Today’s top game: It’s another day without eye-popping match-ups. However games start at 10:30 AM ET, so there’s that. FanMatch likes Villanova vs. Purdue in the 2K Sports Classic at 9:30 ET.
