Most appealing game (according to FanMatchTM): Princeton at Buffalo. This is what passed for appeal yesterday and it was reasonably interesting after an ugly start. The Tigers picked up a 57-53 road win despite Javon McCrea’s 22 points, which in this game felt like 35. Will Barrett’s three-pointer with 11 seconds left was the dagger.

Major upsets (<15% win probability): None (at least of the D-I on D-I variety). Honorable mention to Providence who desperately tried to give NJIT a program-defining moment at the Dunk. The Friars let a ten-point second-half lead slip away, only to close the game on a blazing 2-0 run over the final four minutes and pull out a 64-63 win.

Crazy comebacks (<3% win probability): No graph for this one yet, but it’s safe to say that Sacred Heart overcoming a 61-37 deficit with 13:57 left is going to qualify. They forced overtime against Yale and eventually won 85-82. Yale pulled off the fourth-best comeback of last season so I guess this was karma’s return visit.

Unbeatens remaining: 223 (32 fewer than yesterday). Somehow Tennessee Tech remains in this group. Oh, I know how: They scheduled one of the nation’s worst college basketball teams for their opener. Kenneth Massey ranked 2,124 teams last season and Crowley’s Ridge was ranked 1,990th. Last season, Crowley’s Ridge lost to Houston Baptist 123-43. The year before, the Pioneers lost to Tennessee Tech 106-44. This year the final was 107-32, thanks only to the mercy of the Golden Eagles. Tech was up 100-25 with 11:22 remaining when we must assume the game went to a running accelerated clock given the lack of scoring that ensued.

Winless teams remaining: 176 (49 fewer than yesterday). Rice, after losing to St. Thomas of Texas by 13 in its opener, remains in the club. That’s what happens when six of your nine would-be returning rotation players leave the program in the off-season.

Other notable events: Green Bay missed 16 of 17 three-point attempts and still beat Chicago State by five. Getting to the line 48 times probably had something to do with it.

Today’s top game: Syracuse and San Diego State will try to make it 1-for-3 in games successfully completed on boats this season with a 4 pm ET tip aboard the USS Midway.
