The Lobos prevailed in an entertaining game, 86-81. I want to like Davidson, but their defense was rather sketchy. Maybe they were slow because of the altitude and the time difference, or maybe they’re just slow. The Wildcats are already running offense like it’s March, though, and they’ll be an entertaining entry in the Old Spice Classic. The Lobos held serve, but if we learned anything it’s that they may be a poor man’s 2012 Missouri, deploying a small lineup that gives up a lot of points but often scores more.

Major upsets (<15% win probability): Besides the daily non-D-I victory (this time it was Alabama-Huntsville over Tony Mitchell and North Texas), American (12%) stunned Quinnipiac, 61-55, behind 19 from Stephen Lumpkins.

Crazy comebacks (<3% win probability): None, but I’ll offer the WP graph for Liberty/William & Mary to illustrate what a 32-5 run after halftime looks like.

Unbeatens remaining: 176 (26 fewer than yesterday). Saint Peter’s continued its inevitable assault on ‘76 Indiana with a 63-61 win over Central Connecticut. The Peacocks moved to 2-0 after winning just five games all of last season. The coolest thing about them is that their senior point guard, Blaise Ffrench, has never made a three-pointer. Bob Knight would be proud.

Winless teams remaining: 117 (30 fewer than yesterday). Robert Morris returned almost everyone from a team that went 26-11 last season. With a 25-point loss to Rider and a 29-point loss to Lehigh, they’re an early candidate for one of the season’s biggest disappointments. Things are so bad that Lucky Jones has missed 12 of his 16 field goal attempts thus far. What if he was Unlucky?

Other notable events: Gonzaga completely destroyed West Virginia, 84-50. I’m this close to moving them into the exclusive club with Memphis as teams that are locks to win their conference this season.

Alan Williams Watch: Our statistical superhero took on Illinois State. I mean that literally, because Williams was his unusual self, scoring 15, rebounding 13 (6 offensive), blocking 4 and stealing 3. His teammates, however, gave him no help and UCSB lost by 28. Through two games, Williams has rebounded 21% of the Gauchos’ misses and blocked 11% of opponents’ 2-point shots.

Today’s top game: FanMatch gives a slight edge to Duke/Kentucky over Michigan State/Kansas. So hunker down for the Champions Classic doubleheader at 7 ET.

Most appealing game (according to FanMatchTM): Davidson at New Mexico.
